Design for Eternity
Collection Box for the Cologne Cathedral
Spring 2009
Design for Eternity was a group project led by professor Jenz Großhans in Köln International School of Design (KISD). The customer in this project was none other than the Cologne Cathedral.
Our group (me, Carolina Arevalo Lopez, Sam Dunne
Arne Holzenburg, Antonio Di Luca, Philip Rose) produced a concept that would replace the old uninviting collection boxes of "the Dom" with new ones that tell a story about where the money is going, which is maintenance of the building itself. By using the same stone that the Dom is made of, or even unused spire pieces from the cathedral's stone workshop, the design uses its material to point out the purpose of collecting money.
The top part is made of stainless steel. The words "thank you" are carved to its surface in multiple languages, followed by a slot for coins. The collection box invites a curious tourist to examine its details and engage in donation. |
